    Edmund - Olexa interview recap

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 02:37 PM PST

    March 12th, 2021

    RECAP--------------------------------------------------------------------

-After Delirium/Void rework there are no more plans at the moment.

-Ed does want to make another small new game mode in the future.

-Ed contacted the Antibirth devs immediately after it was released, he said if they had contacted him before he would've helped implement it officially earlier.

-There are many features Ed was saving for a hypothetical Isaac 2 that he used in repentance.

-Late game Antibirth bosses will have some attack patterns removed.

-The buffs shown in today's blogpost are the more drastic ones (Glass cannon, GB bug, Holy water), Ed said that most buffs are minor in comparison.

-Brother Bobby and Sister Maggy are presumably getting a small buff. Bob's Brain is getting slightly fixed.

-When asked about the meaning of 34, Ed said "I don't know."

-Some Four Souls items may or may not have found their way into Repentance, and vice versa.

-Ed microwaves his water when making tea.

What accessibility features would you like to see in Repentance?

Never saw this before, in over 700 hours

(SPOILER?) Here's all the new info about Repentance / Four Souls I was able to get from the interview!

    Posted: 12 Mar 2021 03:04 PM PST

Here's all the info i was able to grab from the interview on Olexa's twitch channel. I missed the beginning, so if you have more stuff to add, please do. Also, I've never played Four Souls and I'm transcribing stuff as I heard it, so if anything sounds wrong, please correct me. Let's go!

    REPENTANCE

-Some ideas in Repentance will look like they were obviously intended for a sequel, they're big ideas but none of them would be substantial enough to be the basis of a sequel

-We will see why the game took three years to develop when we finally get to play and explore it

-The game feels perfect to Edmund difficulty-wise right now, especially Hard Mode

-Hard mode will feel much harder for newcomers / experienced players, but probably just a medium learning curve for very very good players

-You don't realize how boring the game is right now until you play repentance, AB+ holds your hand too much and some items make a run trivial. Repentance will make every action feel like it has a consequence in the long run

-Repentance aims at replicating the feeling of getting into a new game / discovering TBOI, makes every run feel like a clutch, like you fought to get to the end and deserved your win

-Joked about extra hard mode, which would revert the game to the difficulty Vinh (Antibirth dev and main dev of repentance with Edmund) intended it to be, which was very hard since he's so good at the game he had a hard time balancing the difficulty

-He will probably have to tweet before release that "There is no shame in playing normal mode" which is a very scary sentence

-Alternate paths will not be unlocked by default on a new save, but most players who already have a save will have them unlocked

-Edmund hates the fact that you can use the console to give yourself items and unlock things, but feels like it's a necessity for modding. In his perfect world, you shouldn't be able to access the debug console until you 100% the game, but since that's probably not a good idea the console will most likely be a little harder to access (he said submenus)

-There are tons of tiny balance adjustments, at the beginning of dev there were literally pages and pages of suggested tweaks Vinh (?) had compiled

-The ones in this week's blogpost are some of the most drastic, the rest are rather minor changes (he gives the example of brother bobby "shooting more", and hints at Sister Maggy probably doing the same)

-He says Bob's Brain is better now, but "not in the way we want"

-Some items will have one more/less charge, and a few will have more than that

-Some of the unreleased / WIP Antibirth content has been ported to Repentance

-Late-game Antibirth bosses are being reworked to have fewer attack patterns and be telegraphed more easily

-There are no plans of ever adding a way to disable specific rooms/items/enemies from appearing in a run like some roguelikes permit

    FOUR SOULS

-The new kickstarter will have more merch than the previous one

-Ed has collected every knockoff Isaac plush he could find, and he's amazed at the speed and lack of shame with which people make off-brand isaac merch

-There will be Four Souls Requiem items in Repentance, and vice-versa

-Requiem will push the political aspects of the game, as in your relation to other players: Do you want to be the bad guy, make alliances, be friendly so people pay it forward, etc. There will be blue shell items that target the person in first place.

-New optional deck called the Room Deck, that changes every time you kill an enemy. Has a global enchantement type thing that affects all players, or all enemies, or all rewards, etc.

-For example, one card doubles the rewards, so maybe you want to change it so nobody gets double rewards, or be the good guy so people are nice to you later on

-The expansion will pad out some holes. Edmund says he often thinks of a mechanic, then searches for an item to fit it (not the opposite). If he doesn't find a fitting item, he makes up a new one

    EDMUND'S CONTROVERSIAL TAKES

    -A hot-dog is a sandwich

    -A taco is a sandwich

-A hot dog is a taco

-You can microwave water to make your tea (he does it because his water heater is full of ants)

-Edmund has eaten ramen raw and thinks there's nothing wrong with it
