    TL;DR: J & E are in a weird multiplayer limbo, and become OP when you play them as an actual multiplayer character.

    Initially, it seems like Jacob and Esau are meant to be played multiplayer. Their mechanic makes perfect sense as the only "canon multiplayer" character- meant for each to be played by a different person. If you take advantage of this, however, it breaks the game a bit. But as a result, J&E are easier to complete.

    To play Jacob and Esau as multiplayer, have two controllers plugged in. (Or one controller one keyboard.) From your Player1 device, open the menu, and hit "change controller". The new controller you change to will be assigned Jacob, and the original controller Esau.

    From this point you can continue on in Multiplayer "hard mode". If one of J or E dies, both die. However, for some reason the game can now be put in a multiplayer "easy mode". If you exit to menu, then continue on your save, Jacob and Esau will still be split between two controllers, but with key differences: Dying will not cause both to die, the dead player will respawn at the next killed boss. Additionally, boss rooms drop two items.

    If you want to take the cheap way out, you can now just play Jacob or Esau alone and let the other tank damage and die. You are essentially a single character, but with double boss drops. Achievements, marks, etc. still all unlock as normal. However, it's also an opportunity to actually play out the completion in multiplayer. Grab a friend, an SO, someone interested, and just go to town. There's no need to stress your J & E completion because it doesn't need to be frustrating and challenging, it can just be some good clean OP multiplayer fun.

    This method is unbalanced compared to base J & E. But it's fun, it's only one characters' worth of completion marks, and the real completion is the friends we make along the way, right? Right.
