Tips for creating modded items (from a guy working on a mod).

    Posted: 17 Mar 2022 02:44 AM PDT

I'm currently working on a mod for the game which adds a ton of items, trinkets, bosses, etc. etc. I can't say too much yet, but I already have a lot of ideas and concepts down.

While working on the mod and designing item mechanics, I discovered a list of 5 tips and tricks on how to easily create an item as a concept/for a mod, and I felt I would share it with you guys since I feel you deserve to know.

    Here they are below:

    1. Look for stuff around your house or places you go to.

A lot of TBoI: R items are inanimate objects you'd find in your house: Bar of Soap, Stapler, The Belt, D6, Dr. Fetus, etc. etc.

If you're really starving for item concepts, just go around your house, and take a closer look at objects you may have not paid much attention to before. Look at books on your bookshelf, the stuff in your cabinets, living room, in your closet, and more. There will probably be something you can turn into an item for your mod.

It doesn't even need to be your house, but even places like the store, your school, or anywhere else you usually go to. There will probably be something you can turn into an item for your mod.

Bonus Tip: A lot of inanimate object items are in the Boss Item Pool. If you need to come up with stuff for that item pool, your room might be a good place to start.

    2. Think outside the box.

If you see stuff that you could turn into an item, but you can't think of anything, I would suggest using what I'm going to coin the "Connection Method", where you connect a possible item to concepts or ideas its related to.

To give an example of the Connection Method, let's use a pre-existing item that everyone knows and is heavily acquainted with: Holy Mantle.

Here is what I assume Edmund's thought process was when he created the mechanic for Holy Mantle:

Holy Mantle -> Cross -> Faith -> Divine -> Divine Protection -> Protection from enemies - Blocks the first hit in every room

Or, how about another item, and one that's a bit of a favourite with this community: Rock Bottom.

Rock Bottom -> Nowhere to go but up -> Can't go down any further -> Stats can't go down

With this method, it becomes a lot easier to come up with item mechanics. Just think of stuff related to your possible item, and work your way from there.

    3. Don't be afraid to make items that are similar to other items.

There are hundreds of speed ups, thousands of damage ups, millions of tears ups. Several items are literally identical to others (The Belt and Wooden Spoon), nearly identical to others (Sagittarius and Cupid's Arrow), or very similar to others (Host Hat and Infamy).

If you're thinking of an item, don't be afraid to make it very close to a pre-existing one, Edmund and Kilburn do it too, and that's totally okay.

    4. Look to enemies and bosses for inspiration.

Many items in the game are references to bosses and enemies in TBoI:R. From Monstro's Lung to Head of Krampus, from BBF to Worm Friend, it becomes clear that Edmund and Kilburn sometimes reuse their own enemy and boss ideas for items, and you should do it too.

Next time you're playing (or you could just go surfing the wiki), look closer at enemies/bosses you previously never thought too hard about. Think about their attacks, their appearance, and try to formulate an item concept based on that.

    5. If all else fails, make it a reference.

Poke Go, Notched Axe, Shoop Da Whoop!, Mega Mush, Spirit Sword, Friendly Ball, etc. etc.

All of these are items that reference some form of pre-existing media. Whether it be a video game, movie, TV show, or internet meme, you can probably come up with some item concept just by looking at pieces of media, and Isaac-ifying it. Think of how something you've seen on the internet or on your TV might work as an item in the game.

It can be anything. An object from that one cartoon you watched as a kid, your favourite SCP, or the lyrics to Weird Al Yankovich's "Hardware Store" (no joke this song helped give me ideas for several items and trinkets in my mod).

And that's all the tips and tricks I could think of for now, if you have anything else you wanna add, feel free to comment it below.

If you know someone who's working on an Isaac mod that adds items or even just trinkets, send them this guide, maybe they'll learn a thing or two, or not, it's worth a shot anyway.
