Finished Blue Bomber on my 3rd file, but since there was a sacrifice room in Sheol and max health and the Wafer (along with a boatload of great items) I thought: Let's also clean the Dark Room for good measure. Am I the only one to do this: overshoot the target just for fun and giggles?

I love BoI and roguelikes, so... I quit my job and spent 2.5 years making one. It's surely the best piece of software I've ever written :)

Many years ago, a friend of mine introduced me to the Binding of Isaac and I was immediately hooked. The quirky style and the permadeath were so addictive that I couldn't put the game down (JUST... ONE... MORE... RUN....). Before long I was knee-deep in other roguelikes, absorbing as much as I could from other greats (EtG, NT). I realized there was a lot of opportunity to expand on the genre, so I decided to quit my job and devote a few years to creating my own game: Rogue Star Rescue.

I'm thankful to Edmund and Florian who dared take an unconventional path and bring us this undeniable classic. BoI taught me many valuable lessons, and I'd like to share how they contributed to my decision to go all-in on a roguelike of my own.

BoI introduced me to the beauty of RNG and showed how it adds to high replayability. Even after 50+ hours into the game, I hadn't discovered 1/4 of the content. It was a game-changer, literally. When I started programming Rogue Star Rescue, my main design focus was to keep it fun past the 100-hour mark.

BoI taught me to be persistent and patient as a programmer. I wanted my game to have a similar level of variability. So I rolled up my sleeves and, in the course of months, added 200+ guns and passive items with their powerful synergy abilities. It was a time-consuming process but well worth it. From this I learned that I should also put in the hard work to make it playable online. After a year of fighting with network coding, I was finally able to get a 4 player online co-op up and running smoothly :)

BoI showed me that the faster and easier the learning curve is, the greater chance more players will enjoy the game. Easy to play, hard to master. BoI nailed it. Learning from this, I balanced my game to be difficult yet accessible. I also introduced three difficulty modes to make sure every player has an opportunity to progress in the game.

BoI showed me how important a well-crafted story is. I got inspired to create a narrative that, like Isaac's, would make the players more invested into the game's world. I outlined a story of a Rogue Star destroying our universe. Yet, it's less dark and tragic :)

BoI showed me the importance of a great soundtrack. Danny Baranowsky did an exceptional job! The soothing tune after beating bosses hits a nerve. As an indie developer, I'm on a tight budget, but I learned I couldn't compromise on the music. In collaboration with composer René Breitbarth, we sculpted an expansive OST. You can listen to one of the songs in the trailer below.

In a nutshell, BoI set a high bar for roguelikes. Creating a quality game with high replayability is no easy task. I spent 2.5 years developing mine, and it's time to share it with my fellow BoI fans. So here it is, Rogue Star Rescue. I'd love to hear what you guys think, have I done the genre justice?

    TL;DR

-I learned a lot from playing and studying BoI, and went all-in on making my own roguelike.

-Hundreds of randomly generated dungeons, guns, items, crazy powerups, unlockables, and synergies. A non-linear story with 32 endings. Designed to surprise even after 100+ hours.

-Online and local co-op, so you can have a blast with your friends.

-If you'd like to explore the Rogue Star Rescue universe, it's available on Steam. I'd love to hear your feedback!

What is the soft cap for the Luck stat?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2021 09:56 AM PST

I know you can raise the luck stat as high as you want, if you play your Jera runes right. But how high can your luck go before it stops making a difference? Is there any practical application to raising your luck to 1000, or does it stop doing anything after 10?
