Boss Discussion

Balls...y of me to go this long without posting today's Boss Discussion, if I do say so myself. My sincerest apologies—I heard a mysterious voice from my ~~television~~ laptop telling me to, uh, focus on my meeting instead of typing up an intro for this post. At long last, though, I have broken free of the chains that bound me. And, in honor of my newfound agency, I bring to you, hot off the presses, a...well, a Reddit post. Rejoice, dorks and dweebs!

Hope everybody is having a wonderful morning, afternoon, or evening depending on when you read these words. Today, for Boss Discussion #3, we're talking the static specter themselves. One half of the game's coolest end fight, you know 'em, you love 'em, it's Dogma. So, unless your soul has been corrupted my sin, let's get discussing 🕶

[Dogma]

Behaviors

• Dogma is fought over two phases, one of which is relatively stationary, and one of which is highly mobile

Phase 1

During Phase 1, Dogma is attached to a television which must be hit to deal damage; any attacks directed at Dogma will be blocked by a shield. Dogma leaves a trail of damaging Static Creep wherever it moves, and has a variety of attacks:

• Fires 3 consecutive radial bursts of 8 Godhead projectiles, which will hurt the player via a beam if Isaac stands in the aura for a few seconds

• Fires 4 bursts of projectiles in groups of 1, 2, 3, and 4 bullets in the cardinal directions. Occasionally, after the 4th burst, Dogma will slow all projectiles down and leave them floating for a few moments—this is more common around 40% HP remaining

• Fires 3 consecutive waves of 3 or 4 projectiles in random directions, which thin create rays pointing towards Isaac. These transform into short-lived damaging lasers after a few seconds

• Fires a static, Brimstone-like beam that bends towards Isaac. This beam is always fired in the closest cardinal direction, and switches if Isaac approaches a different cardinal direction

Phase 2

After the TV is destroyed, Dogma transforms into a Seraph-esque form to begin Phase 2, and begins to chase Isaac. Dogma will flicker between various other forms as it takes more damage, though this is purely a visual effect. During this phase, Dogma has a variety of attacks:

• Fires a spread of disorganized feathers towards Isaac

• Summons a ball of light which creates 16-18 rays of light that spin outwards to point in random directions. These rays stop moving after a few seconds, and become damaging beams. This attack repeats 3 times, following which Dogma throws the ball and fires one last wave of 8 wide beams in cardinal directions.

• Turns into a Ophanim (winged wheel) and floats off-screen before charging towards Isaac, releasing a radial burst of 3 layers of 12 feathers at the end of each dash. This attack repeats 6 times.

When Dogma's HP reaches 0, it is destroyed, and the screen fades to white before turning off like an old TV. Isaac is automatically given Dogma (granting flight, a one-time Mantle, +0.1 Speed, +2 Damage, and enough heart containers to bring Isaac to 6 full hearts). After a cutscene, The Beast fight begins.
