I'm almost positive Magdalene is just Mom. Is that already common knowledge?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2020 02:49 AM PST

Hey guys, I just picked up this game and I'm SUPER into literary analysis, so I have a lot of thoughts that I really want to splatter all over this post, but I'll try not to!

I've read a lot of analysis or discussion posts about Isaac's "sister" Maggie, who may have died or left, bereaving Isaac and quickening his breakdown. Most of these posts are 5+ years old, though, and it's really hard to find any discussion that includes information from AB/AB+. At this point, I'm really quite certain that Isaac has no siblings, and Maggie is his projection of Mom. I have a lot of good reasons!

    1. I feel strongly that the .exe of TBoI is a really narrow window into Isaac's mind, and we're exclusively shown images Isaac is capable of understanding. If something is beyond his comprehension, it's rendered in his psychological world as a physical obstacle, usually some kind of monster (this really clicked after I read that Ed used to get in trouble at school for drawing monsters - I think that's a really natural manifestation of a child's issues if they're the creative type). We have tons of very themed imagery in his psychological world - religious and scatological images of course, but Isaac is also taken with thoughts of blood, putrefaction, birth defects, medication, and pregnancy/miscarriage. These things are the cornerstones of his make-believe world - he's obsessed deeply with each of them. He is not obsessed with guarding or responsibility as I would expect if he was suffering from deep-seated fraternal shame, nor does he seem to think much about brothers and sisters, beyond a few item names (contrast against his cat Guppy who makes very frequent appearances).

    2. Isaac's mother in The Bible was infertile, and only gave birth to Isaac through divine intervention. The Biblical Isaac's life was wracked with spousal and child abuse as a result of his unusual birth, to the point that his half-brother Ishmael and his mother split off from their society after a confrontation. To make a subpoint under this, Mom has cancer, probably in her womb, and the game is full of images of birth defects and dead fetuses. (Reinforcing this, the item description for Cancer is just "yay!" That might just be a silly joke, but Isaac gets VERY sad when you pick up the torn photo - if it was Dad or Isaac or an unknown sibling with cancer, he would probably not attribute positivity to it.) These lead me to believe that Isaac's status as an only child is what contributes to his abuse, not his siblings.

    3. The intro says Isaac lives alone with his mother. While that's not conclusive, the further evidence in the photographs of Ending 14 reinforce it. They are obviously not in the right order, but we see the following images (reordered how I see fit): Mom and Dad happy. Mom and Dad happy with Isaac. Mom and Isaac alone. Mom and Isaac looking out the window (might be happy or sad, might be contemplating Dad's leaving, I don't know. It implies that Mom and Isaac had a better relationship once). Mom and "Maggie" (Isaac) happy. Isaac naked and scared, with his demons in the backdrop. Mom threatening Isaac with a knife. Isaac and The Chest.

What this says to me: Mom and Dad were happy. They were happy with Isaac, too. Then Dad left, and Mom and Isaac's relationship changed. Mom dresses Isaac up like Maggie (this is the first little leap, taking evidence from the between-floor dream sequences), which makes him happy until he sees that his behavior is asocial. Isaac is wracked with shame - his psychological issues first begin to manifest as something real to him, something tied to his religion. Mom abuses him. He hides in The Chest.

    (4. Ed said Isaac doesn't have a sister, but since the game is highly interpretive I don't really know how to even interpret him saying that, lol.)

My headcanon, using all this as evidence: sufferers of Narcissistic Personality Disorder are frequently incapable of internalizing shame or guilt, which often leads them to abuse others as a scapegoat for their own failures. They also frequently see family and friends as a natural extension of themselves, leading them to objectify the people around them. These are concepts Isaac is intimately familiar with (again, the game is only what is comprehensible to him) and is himself exercising to hide from his abusive reality. He got these lessons from Mom, who is legitimately unhinged and very possibly dying of cancer.

So who's Maggie? Well, either before or after Dad left, Mom (whose real name is Magdalene ) had a little incident with Isaac - she dressed him up like the girl child she can't conceive or maybe even just as herself, and called him Maggie because she is narcissistic. (This is evidenced by that same dream sequence, as well as many items such as Mom's Wig, Mom's Heels, Mom's Lipstick, etc.) Isaac, who cannot comprehend that Mom's name isn't Mom, discovers a new persona - one that Mom loves and makes him feel proud and strong. This mirrors Mary Magdalene's journey in The Bible - ostensibly a prostitute, she was overcome with shame for her lifestyle and approached Jesus for help, after which He cast her demons out and healed her. Since The Bible is one of Isaac's very few anchors to reality, I think he probably perceives Mary Magdalene and his Maggie persona to be the same person (likely the case with all Biblical characters?). Isaac went through a makeover ritual with Mom, and the love and praise she showed him made him feel free of his growing demons. But then the world made him feel the opposite, so he took off his Mom clothes (reversing the Biblical event of Adam and Eve clothing themselves once they become aware of their sin), creating a rift between him and Mom and manifesting a demon in his perception of the photograph where his shame was captured.
