A guide for the hardest character [SPOILERS!]

We all know how impossible Tainted Lost feels, especially when you realise that he can't pick up Holy Mantle, Gnawed Leaf, Dead Cat, any of those stuff. Yesterday I struggled for over 10 hours on him, and it was incredibly frustrating. However, there's a cheesy way of turning him into the old Lost, back when you could just use Gnawed Leaf and Daddy Longlegs to beat anything. It only took me like 3 hours that way to kill the Beast as Tainted Lost, and most of that time went into theorycrafting, and not the gameplay itself.

The strategy revolves around starting as Tainted Cain, and crafting the items necessary and then turning into the Tainted Lost with the Clicker.

A final spoiler warning, this post will spoil several crafting recipes. For better readability, I won't hide the rest of the post as spoiler. So if you don't want spoilers, leave now!

As I said, you should start as Tainted Cain. I worked out a relatively efficient crafting path, which worked for me and doesn't involve getting crazy lucky. I'll list my suggested items, and put their crafting recipe right next to them. General strategy is that unless you can craft something, you should clear the floor first instead, leave the pickups on the ground, so you can see for yourself what you can craft, what you're close to crafting, and then decide from there. Half hearts (including soul hearts) count as a whole heart when you put them in your crafting bag.

Early game items:
Sulfuric acid: 5 bombs + 2 pennies + 1 key (one of the best early items, with this you can discover every single secret room, crawl space, break every tinted rock, allowing you to save bombs for crafting recipes)
Divorce Papers: 6 pennies + 2 bombs OR 3 pennies + 3 red hearts + 1 key + 1 bomb (very cheap tears up)
Scorpio: 7 pennies + 1 black heart OR 6 keys + 2 bombs OR 3 bombs + 2 pennies + 1 pill + 1 key + 1 red heart (really decent early game item, which is relatively cheap)
Jacob's Ladder: 3 red hearts + 2 pennies + 1 nickel + 1 bomb + 1 key OR 3 pills + 4 pennies + 1 red heart (really effective, and again, cheap)

Core build for Tainted Lost:
Gnawed Leaf: 4 pennies + 3 bombs + 1 key
Daddy Longlegs: 1 golden key + 1 card + 1 pill + 2 soul hearts + 2 red hearts + 1 key
Clicker: 2 nickels + 2 pennies + 1 key + 1 bomb + 2 red hearts (so that you can transform into Tainted Lost, no need to craft it early)

Alternatives:
Holy Mantle: 1 golden key + 1 card + 4 soul hearts + 1 red heart + 1 penny
Host Hat: 3 pennies + 1 lucky penny + 1 nickel + 1 dime + 1 soul heart + 1 key
Psy Fly: 1 eternal heart + 2 batteries + 2 pills + 3 pennies
Infamy: 3 pennies + 2 hearts + 1 key + 1 bomb + 1 nickel
Sacrificial Dagger: 1 golden bomb + 5 bombs + 2 keys
Mom's Knife: 8 soul hearts (not needed, but can speed up the bossfights if you have a lot of soul hearts lying around)

Good options if you find a dime:
Blanket: 1 dime + 3 nickels + 4 bombs (useful vs bosses)
Contagion: 1 dime + 6 pennies + 1 key (reasonable option if you can't build other dime items)
Inner Eye: 1 dime + 1 nickel + 1 key + 5 pennies OR 1 charged key + 1 card + 3 keys + 3 bombs (haven't tried it, but looks like a considerable option as well)

If you find rotten hearts, you can consider:
Contract from Below: 1 rotten heart + 2 soul hearts + 3 keys + 2 bombs (investment)

If you have a lot of Tainted characters unlocked and you need a cheap item to help you use the Clicker faster:
4.5 Volt: 1 eternal heart + 2 hearts + 3 bombs + 1 key + 1 penny OR 1 golden bomb + 2 pills + 1 bomb + 4 pennies

Notes:
- You don't have to craft everything that's on the list. If you get the core build, you're pretty much set, but you need to survive for that long with the early items.
- If you use the Clicker and turn into another Tainted character, you will lose your Crafting Bag and can no longer craft, so only do that until you have your desired build.
- Having less Tainted characters unlocked will make it more likely that you transform into the Tainted Lost with the Clicker. I was lucky and got him first try, even though I have like 5 Tainted characters unlocked.
- The Clicker will remove the passive item you last picked up, so don't use it as soon as your build is done. Craft a few more passive items from cheap materials.
- A lot of the time blowing up shopkeepers that have money eyes will give you a nickel. You can also use shops to buy pills/cards that you can throw on the ground and use in crafting.
- If you haven't unlocked the item you're trying to craft, you're just going to get Breakfast.
- Don't forget that after you use the Clicker, you can pick up items normally again.

A screenshot to show that it worked for me. You can also see that I only crafted some of the items I listed here, although I picked up a few items after the transformation as the Tainted Lost. The final bossfight might be quite lengthy without Mom's Knife though, but Daddy Longlegs should eventually do the work done if you leave the computer and do something else in the meantime.
