How to Play Jacob and Esau for Dummies

    Posted: 09 Apr 2021 04:35 AM PDT

This is a guide about exploiting advantages that the character provides you with, and how to make the best out of them. Part of playing Jacob and Esau is learning how to play practically, and making good choices. And hopefully this guide can teach you how to apply that knowledge. So without further ado, let's begin.

The first most important thing you should know about this character is that if there are 2 items in an item room, and you're only allowed to take 1, Jacob and Esau can actually take both. You can do this by lining up Esau by the item that he wants, then lining up Jacob by the item he wants, then moving forward to take both. Now let's see where we can benefit you.

    1. Alt Floors - Treasure rooms in the new alternate floors ALWAYS give you the choice of 2 items, allowing you take take both. There are hardly any situations where going down the main path is better than taking the alternate route. (P.S. Don't forget that you can abandon the alternate path as well, If you aren't confident about going to Mines or Mausoleum, just don't go. But I would recommend practicing Downpour and Dross, because it will help you long-term)
    2. Angel Rooms - Usually an Angel Room gives you the choice of only 1 free item, and the rest will disappear. Jacob and Esau can exploit this and take 2 items instead. Taking Devil Deals with this character is especially dangerous, considering health management will be the biggest problem you will face.
    3. Boss Rush - Boss Rush usually gives the choice of 4 items. Jacob and Esau can take 2/4 of these items. But don't think that you will be forced to fight the wave of bosses. You can just bomb the tinted skull that's guaranteed to show up on Depths II to get a "The Fool" card. You can use it after provoking Boss Rush to essentially get 2 free items.
    4. You can also take The Polaroid and The Negative at the same time as well, just so you know.

Now that you know where and how you can apply this gimmick, how can you maximize your profit by using it? First you must analyze Jacob and Esau's strengths and weaknesses. You want to to minimize your weakness, but maximize what you're already good at. For example, Jacob starts with +1 luck, but Esau starts with -1 luck. In this case, most of your luck items should naturally go to Jacob, since he already has a head-start in that stat. That's an example of capitalizing on what he's already good at. But Esau has lower tears than Jacob. So naturally, your tears items should go to him. This is an example of minimizing what's he's bad at.

This is obvious stuff, but it allows me to talk about more subtle weaknesses. If I were to ask you which of the 2 is most vulnerable, what would you say? If you said Esau, you're wrong. If you said Jacob, you're wrong. Despite Esau having less red hearts than Jacob, he has something that Jacob doesn't. A soul heart that protects his only red heart. This means that on Floor 1, you should be protecting Esau's soul heart, and on Floor 2, you should be protecting Jacob's red hearts.

Health is the toughest thing to manage for this character. You should evenly distribute hearts to both of them, so none of them are closer to dying than the other. You should aim to have both of their health bars perfectly balanced (unless one of them has The Wafer or something). You don't have to completely abide by this rule, but once one of them starts to lose health, gaining it back becomes a priority that might put you in a completely doomed run.

Another weakness is that their movement is linked together. This means that flight may end up being worse for you, since they both do not benefit from it. But one of the characters has better movement than the other. I'm of course I'm talking about Jacob. Since he can move independently from Esau, most movement related items should be given to him. This includes flight, familiars, orbitals, and creep. I compiled a list of general rules of thumb that you should abide by when deciding to take items.

    1. Don't dump all your defensive items onto a single character. There is a reason why Jacob and Esau runs are lost easily despite the fact that you gain twice as much items as other characters. The main reason is because once you are at below average health, you're set on a doomed run, and it's practically impossible to recover. Don't forget that you are trying to maintain 2 separate health bars, and if one goes down more than the other, it will affect gameplay for both. If that happens, now your main priority is to protect the defenseless character before he dies, but you could've avoided this if you had just protected them both equally.
    2. Give familiars to just one character only. BFF's and Song of the Siren only affects the character that picked it up. If you want to maximize the potential of these items, only 1 of the characters should hoard all the familiars. I would recommend using Jacob for this.
    3. Give Blue Flies and Blue Spiders to the character that has the most damage. Their damage does 2x your damage, so you can exploit this by trying to give them to your main damage dealer. Esau has higher base damage, so you will usually want to give items like Guppy's Head and Box of Spiders to him.
    4. Exploit the fact that you can drop 2 bombs for the price of 1. This is one of Jacob and Esau's clearest advantages. Not only are your bombs 2x more effective against bosses, there are even countless practical ways you can use this out of combat. Whenever you are going to use a bomb, ask yourself one thing. "What should I use my other bomb for?" If you are destroying a tinted rock, you may as well use your other bomb to find a secret room. Or, you can use it to find a crawlspace. You can use it to destroy 2 blue fires. You can use both bombs to destroy special tinted rocks. Don't overlook the advantages this character gives to you, exploit it instead.

Okay, so now you know how to make practical choices when playing as Jacob and Esau, but skillful gameplay if going to be the hard part. Jacob and Esau is almost like a big target for monsters and bosses to hit you. They take up way more space than the average character. Because of this, when fighting enemies, you have to ALWAYS keep them close together. The closer they are, the smaller their hurt-box becomes. Jacob and Esau will always do better as a pair, because their stats are actually very low on their own. This means that during boss fights, you must sometimes stop what you're doing, and start to guide Jacob closer to Esau before you get separated. You will have to learn how to control Jacob on command when the situation needs it.

It's almost always better to stand in a line when fighting a bullet hell oriented boss like Hush or Delirium (with one character in front of another), than standing side-by-side. This is going to your battle-stance kind of thing. The reason for this is because you are taking up less space, and it becomes easier to dodge bullets this way. This, of course, means that the character in the front is more likely to take damage. But it's always better to know which one is going to take damage than it being a 50/50 chance. Typically, you want the character with the most health to protect the one with lower health

    .

Everything else such as synergies, and tactics will come naturally from experience. You may find that my tips may not work at all for you. That's fine, there are 1000 ways you can play this character. Your job is just to find the way that leads you on winning run. And that concludes the end of the guide.
